Monday Motivation: Taking the First Step

The first step is the hardest to take – but it doesn’t have to be. In order to truly get outside our comfort zones and do the things we think we cannot do, we must:

  1. Let go of other people’s expectations
  2. Let go of the fear of not being perfect
  3. Put one foot in front of the other

We must also remember that:

  1. We’re going to make mistakes
  2. Mistakes aren’t epic failures
  3. We’d make just as many mistakes inside our comfort zones

So…

What’s the worst that could possibly happen?

What is seriously the worst thing that could possibly happen by taking the first step? We know we’re going to slip anyways, we know we’re going to make mistakes anyways, and we know that our mistakes won’t dictate the rest of our lives or who we are fundamentally as people. So, what’s the risk?

Here’s a clue: there is no risk.

There’s a much greater risk in staying inside our comfort zones than there is stepping outside our comfort zones.

We can only grow and learn and evolve by taking the step. We know where the path we’re currently on leads – more of the same.

And sometimes same is good, don’t get me wrong. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” are certainly words of wisdom to consider.

But we’re not talking about reinventing any wheels here. We’re talking about getting out of ruts, facing fears, overcoming obstacles, stretching our capabilities, developing confidence, and living the life of our dreams.

All of which require that we do something we’ve never done before.

This week, we talk about taking that very first step in the direction of something we’ve never done before and how to wrap our heads around it.
